A message from your Web-mistress…

We “said it like a pirate” at the Day of YA!

Pink pirates can only mean one thing: Day of YA! What a fantastic way to begin the annual RWA conference in Orlando, Florida with all things pink to celebrate young adult literature. Thanks to our event organizer extraordinaire Lea Nolan, tables were set with bright pink paper flower centerpieces, place settings highlighted with fuscia information packets, and pretty blossom ornaments to be worn however you like!

Jen Armentrout kicked off the morning with a fabulous speech about her rise to YA fame and a personal story that shed new light on her meaning of success. Damon Suede led an incredibly dynamic workshop presentation on building characters that resonate with readers. It’s a good thing he provided a handout with a detailed outline of his speech. He was so captivating—the handout allowed me to fully focus on his presentation instead of feverishly jotting down notes. (Though in all honesty, I did jot down a few because there were some extra nuggets of wisdom I didn’t want to forget.)

Throughout the morning, Leigh kept all attendees engaged by raffling off door prizes (lots of great books by YARWA members – yay!) and encouraging everyone to participate in the silent auction that offered everything from agent/editor first-page critiques to web design services.

The event closed with President Mary Karlik revealing the Rosemary contest winners and coordinator Monica Jones declaring her winners for our first contest for published authors, The Athena.

Tremendous to thanks to all the volunteers who made the Day of YA possible, especially Lea Nolan who led the charge and made all things pink just perfect! Check out the scenes from the 2017 Day of YA!
